Such scams were conducted over time (days, weeks, or even months) on a one-at-at-a-time basis, often using hand-written letters, with varying degrees of success (see, e.g., Buse, 2005; Onyebadi & Park, 2012; Holt & Graves, 2007). The advent of computing systems and rapid development of internet-based platforms has led to the proliferation and increased efficacy of these schemes. Examples include phishing (Alkhalil, Hewage, Nawaf, & Khan, 2021; Dhamija, Tygar, & Hearst, 2006), online grooming (Nikolovska, 2020; O’Connell, 2003), and advance fee fraud scams (Chang, 2008; Tambe Ebot, Siponen, & Topalli, 2023). Of particular note are scams that rely on the use of deception to foment an intimate relationship or connection between a scammer and unsuspecting victim to defraud the victim of their financial resources or blackmail them. These are referred to as online romance fraud (ORF) or romance scams (Whitty & Buchanan, 2016) and they have increased at an alarming rate over the past decade,1 due in large part to the exponential advancement of computer technology and usability of social media platforms (see Topalli & Nikolovska, 2020).

People who reported a higher number of changes in sexual life during the pandemic seemed to experience more anxiety, depression, and stress (Panzeri et al., 2020). COVID-related stressors may predict a decrease in relational satisfaction and an increase in maladaptive relationship behaviors, such as conflict (Balzarini et al., 2020; Luetke et al., 2020). For the present narrative review, we collected 105 scientific articles found using PubMed and PsicInfo.

During the pandemic, people’s lives dramatically changed and individuals had to cope with many stressors such as social isolation, recreative, physical, and social limitations, school closures, forced cohabitation, financial uncertainty, fear of contagion, and death. Such an emergency negatively affected individuals’ psychological health worldwide, triggering stressful emotional responses characterized by an increase in negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, and a decrease in positive emotions and life satisfaction (Li S. et al., 2020; Pera, 2020; Salari et al., 2020). For instance, recent research has shown that this situation induced a change in sleep-wake rhythms and a decrease in sleep quality (Cellini et al., 2020) and an increase in anxiety, depression, and harmful alcohol abuse (Ahmed et al., 2020; Cao et al., 2020; Pera, 2020).

These same studies also demonstrated increased solo masturbation, while research from Australia (Coombe et al., 2021) demonstrated a decline in solo masturbation. Canadian work observed that solo masturbation decreased over time among adults without a romantic live-in partner (Brotto et al., 2022). Research from the United States demonstrated that one in ten adults participated in mutual masturbation, oral sex, and vibrator use less frequently (Hensel et al., 2023). Two recent systematic reviews of sexual frequency during COVID-19 also generally support reduced activity (Delcea et al., 2021; Masoudi et al., 2022).

We chose three country-level measures that could both immediately and more proximally impact access to sex. Data for the current study were drawn from a larger project, “International Sexual Health And REproductive Health during COVID-19” (I-SHARE-1)—a cross-sectional, online, 30-country study conducted between August 2020 and January 2021. The purpose of the study was to assess adult sexual and reproductive health before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in respective countries. Research teams were initially identified through a UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP) crowdsourcing open call and additionally recruited affiliates of the Academic Network for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ANSER).

• A total of 557 individuals participated in this study, of who 196 (35.2%) identified their gender as male, 347 (62.3%) as female and 13 (2.3%) as “other”, “neither” or “both” genders.
